POOL GAMES’ RULES
2023 NFHS rules apply with the following exceptions:
1. A Coin toss will be conducted at Home Plate to determine the Home/Visitor team.
2. Pool Games
A. Pool Games will be 80 minutes – Drop Dead, or 7 innings, whichever occurs first. A Pool Game may end sooner than 80 minutes or, or 7 innings, if the Run Ahead Rule is invoked (10 after 4, 8 after 5, 6 after 6).
B. A Pool Game begins upon arrival of the Umpires at Home Plate, unless a team is delayed due to the necessity of moving from the site of a previously completed game on another Field.
C. If a batter is at bat when time expires, that batter will complete her turn at bat as defined in NFHS Rule 6-2 (“The time at bat is the period beginning when a batter first enters the batter’s box and continues until put out or the batter becomes a batter-runner.”) All playing action will be completed as a result of the batter completing her turn at bat (i.e. runs scored, etc.). The score of a Pool Game will be the score of the Game at the conclusion of the last play and may end in a Tie.
3. The Final Score will be verified by both Umpires and both Head Coaches before they leave the Field of Play. Each Coach will initial the Umpire’s Game Card.
4. Teams may bat a minimum of 9 players, any number of players, or utilize a continuous batting order of rostered players.
5. Free Defensive Substitutions are allowed including players listed on the roster but not listed in the batting order.
6. Courtesy Runner for Pitcher or Catcher will be the last batter due up if using a continuous batting order, or eligible substitute if batting less than entire roster.
7. Pitching Rules. The PGF “PITCHING RULE CHANGE” will be in effect as listed at www.premiergirlsfastpich.com.
*The stride foot may be on or behind the plate as far back as desired. Once the Pitcher initially sets the toe of her stride foot, she may NOT step, drag or slide it back any further.
*Pitcher must take the pitching signal only from the required pitching position (on the pitcher’s plate, hands apart).
*Hand signals/verbal may come from the dugout prior to the pitcher being on the pitcher’s plate.
*However, arm band information must be gathered by the pitcher while on the pitcher’s plate and in the pitching position.
*Pitching signals from the catcher must be given only when the pitcher is in the pitching position and on the pitcher’s plate.
NCAA is emphasizing that illegal pitches be called for violation of this rule.
8. These games are NON protest games. Umpires’ decision on the field is final.
“There is a product called Gorilla Gold that is used to help grip a softball for the pitchers. This product is legal at the NCAA level and is now legal in PGF. It is a yellow towel that certainly helps if humid or rainy. It was never illegal but because of the stickiness, many umpires weren’t sure. Now it’s officially legal for all PGF events.” Bill Conroy 4-21-2023
